Planet-Safe Culture Dishes and Microplates Receive My Green Lab ACT Labels
Press Release | 5/20/2024
Diversified Biotech Inc., a global leader in laboratory labeling solutions and innovative products designed to aid life science researchers, proudly announces the first group of Planet-Safe® labware, including 100mm Cell Culture Dishes, 96-Well Cell Culture Microplates and Weighing Boats, has earned the Accountability, Consistency and Transparency (ACT) label from My Green Lab, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a culture of sustainability in science.
Planet-Safe® is a 100% plant-based alternative to petroleum-based labware that is: commercially compostable, petroleum-free, safe for incineration, and generates an 83% lower carbon footprint than polystyrene. Planet-Safe® Labware is made from polylactic acid (PLA), a bio-resin derived by extracting starch from sugarcane. All Planet-Safe®resin is supplied by TotalEnergies Corbion, a technology leader in PLA and lactide monomers focused on maintaining a sustainable supply chain, a partner that reflects Diversified Biotech’s commitment to socially responsible business practices. Sugarcane used to make Planet-Safe® is certified by Bonsucro, the global sustainability platform for sugarcane, ensuring a commitment to: lower water use, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, lower use of fertilizers, and exceptional social equity.
Disposal of Planet-Safe® labware reduces environmental impact in all scenarios when compared to petroleum-based counterparts. Planet-Safe® branded products are ASTM D6400 certified to fully compost in an industrial composting facility and ASTM D6002 certified non-phytotoxic once composted. When incineration of lab waste is required, the composition of Planet-Safe® will not release harmful compounds into the atmosphere. In circumstances where landfill disposal is necessary, due to its plant-based nature, the amount of CO2 sequestered in each unit and not released into the atmosphere, provides an environmental benefit over traditional labware.
In addition to these environmental benefits, the Planet-Safe® PLA surface exhibits enhanced cellular adhesion characteristics that eliminates the need for additional surface coatings. Studies testing cell adhesion have shown that when seeded at that same rate, a Planet-Safe® surface will, on average, contain 42% more cells than a typical TC-Treated surface after 24 hours. When comparing cell growth between the same surfaces, both cell growth rate and cellular morphology are indistinguishable.

About Diversified Biotech Inc.
Founded in 1984, Diversified Biotech Inc. has focused on developing innovative solutions for the life science research industry including cryogenic and freezer labels for laboratory consumables such as Cryo-Tags®, Tough-Tags® and Tough-Spots®. In addition, Diversified Biotech Inc. designs unique products to ease the daily burden of researchers. Expertise in various materials was leveraged to commercialize the first patented plant-based cell cultureware (Planet-Safe®).
About the ACT Label
The ACT Environmental Impact Factor Label was designed to address the need of both scientists and procurement specialists for clear, third-party verified information about the environmental impact of laboratory products. By emphasizing Accountability, Consistency, and Transparency (ACT) around manufacturing, energy and water use, packaging, and end-of-life, ACT makes it easy to choose more sustainable products. ACT-labeled products are independently audited by SMS Collaborative, LLC (SMSC) and published by My Green Lab.
